PABC Fall 2010 Evening Lecture Series: Considerations for your Special Patient

Lecture one: Handling the Difficult Patient with Barbara Picton BSR. M.Ed, RCC.

Date: Thursday, September 16th, 2010
Location: VGH Eye Care Centre at 2250 Willow Street, 7:00 - 8:30pm

While physios are able to build great relationships with the majority of our patients, occasionally there comes along the ‘difficult patient’. What to do?

Barbara invites you to bring your ‘challenges’ to the meeting and use these difficult encounters to learn new effective and professional methods to cope better in the future.

Three important topics that we’ll explore are; grounding/centering/boundaries, understanding how conflict triggers you personally, and learning effective communication skills to use in times of stress.

Barbara Picton has been a physiotherapist since 1969 and a clinical counsellor since 1994. She works in private practice in Vancouver in both of these disciplines and also is an instructor at Vancouver Community College teaching ‘Basic Counselling Skills’. Lecture Three: Great Expectations: The joys and challenges of treating the active and inactive boomer generation with Jane Calland & Dawn Siegel

Date: Thursday, November 18th, 2010
Location: VGH Eye Care Centre at 2250 Willow Street, 7:00 - 8:30pm

Those born between 1946-1964 have expectations that would not be thought realistic 30 years ago. Jane and Dawn will look at changes that need to be considered, both “normal” age related, and potential secondary or pathological changes. They will discuss how these changes influence:

  1. A regular exercise schedule: i.e. a realistic weekly schedule for a “runner” or “tennis player”.
Examples will compare a 30 year old with a 50+ year old.
  2. Likelihood of injury
  3. Response to injury
  4. Return to activity

Presenters: Jane Calland, DipPT, FCAMT and Dawn Siegel, BScPT, RCAMT

Jane is an associate at Hollyburn Physiotherapy in West Vancouver and both instructs and assists in post-graduate manual therapy for the Orthopaedic Division of Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
